In 1994, "Euroceanica NV" was set up with the intention of participating in the privatization of Italian state controlled ship-owning companies.
The main corporate shareholders were;
- Rimorchiatori Riuniti S.p.A. (offshore vessels- tug operators)
- Ignazio Messina S.p.A. (ferries, containers, and liner operations)
- PKB Privatbank AG (banking)
- Mariotti S.p.A. (shipbuilding)
In addition to these corporate shareholders, private investors also subscribed to the new venture.
These private shareholders were a group of shipping investors who had been active as a group from the late 1960's and contributed their shipping assets, capital and expertise to the new Euroceanica. They also brought to the new company a history of shipping operations.
Subsequently the Garrone family (Oil refining, ERG) also became shareholders in the new Company.

The intended participation privatization did not materialize but it was decided never the less to continue with the new venture. Subsequently, many additional investments have been made under the Euroceanica name.
Over the years the shareholding structure has changed somewhat but many of the original investors are still shareholders. Today its largest shareholder is Rimorchiatori Riuniti S.p.A.
